Staying informed is one of the best ways to keep yourself safe and educated. Learning about your local neighborhood, your city and state can help you make informed decisions and stay involved. Learning more about crime can also help you stay safe and take any necessary security precautions.

We’ve talked about crime data and security statistics in the past, but this infographic has the complete list of information you need to know about crime and security. We’ve taken data from the FBI, CSIS and more.

We hope this information is both interesting and helpful and that you will spread the word by sharing this to your friends.

Here is the break down of all the home security statistics:

The Average Home

88% of burglaries are residential.

Every 15 seconds a home in the United States is burglarized?

3 out of 4 homes will be broken into over 20 years.

Most burglaries actually occur during the day while homeowners are away from home and at work.

On average, home break-ins occur more frequently during the summer months.

According to the FBI, the average dollar loss per burglary in the U.S. is $2,185.

Homes without an alarm system are 300% more likely to be broken into than homes with a system.

The Average Burglar

41% of burglaries are “spur of the moment” decisions.

60% of the burglars indicated that the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek an alternative target altogether.

¾ of criminals don’t work alone but get help from a friend or family member to complete the crime.

1 in 5 burglars cut telephone lines or alarm wires before entering.

Most burglars gain access by forcing their way in, not by picking the lock or using a key.

Thieves can unlock 90% of doors by lock bumping, which leaves no damage & as a result, insurance companies deny the claim since there is no evidence of forced entry.

Overall

Most Provinces report a higher crime rate in small, urban areas.

In 2012 over 8.9 million property crimes were reported causing over $15.5 billion in damage.

Of those property crimes, 2.1 million were burglary.

40 percent of property crimes are not reported to law enforcement agencies.

The average city of a population over 100,000 experiences 1,216 break-ins per year.

There is a home intrusion every 13 seconds in North America.[:]
